The tabby cat is perhaps one of the most well known in the cat world. Dark grey spots and stripes prevail over a lighter gray or white coat. The term calico much like tabby refers to a pattern of colors rather than a breed. The ticked tabby gene restricts the pigment in the hair to the tips.

A brown tabby has black stripes against a brown and gray background. The fifth pattern is an emergent one expressed by female cats with one black and one orange gene one on each of their two x chromosomes and is explained by barr bodies and the genetics of sex linked. Interestingly all cats are tabby cats but some have a gene that masks the tabby appearance. Think of it as a diluted brown tabby. Silver tabbies are generally a mix of shades of grey. Silver tabbies can be nearly white or very dark in color. The four basic tabby patterns are due to two distinct gene loci the agouti gene locus with two alleles and the tabby locus with three alleles and one modifier spotted with two alleles.

We raise the classic silver tabby which has black markings set on a silver background the typical bullseye pattern seen on the side of the cat. If the cat has black stripes it s not a gray tabby it s a brown or silver tabby. All of the hairs that would be black will instead be blue.
